New players with questions

New players with questions

Hey!

I'm putting together a group of about 5 people to come to this month's event. We're all new to LARP, and are still trying to put together our first characters. Questions abound, of course (most of which I'm sure will be resolved once we get in game), but some directly involve character creation.

First off, a question about the 2 point class skill 'weapon proficiency'. Is this skill required to use any weapon? In other words, if I were to play as a slayer, would I be unable to use any weapon in combat without spending two points to become proficient in a weapon.

Secondly, we were unsure what constituted a 'game'. A player gains two general skill points after their first game. Does this mean that after one full weekend (for example, the june event) we earn the points? Or are there multiple 'games' in one weekend?

Finally, are most general skills primarily for role playing, or can they have an in game effect as well. For example, astrology states that one may receive messages from staring at the stars, and navigation states that it makes it easier to go where you are trying to go. Does this mean there are times where someone with astrology may receive in-game messages, or there are areas in game where players could not travel without a navigator? If so, how does one receive the benefit of a skill like astrology without breaking character to state he or she has taken astrology?

Last but not least, currency. Should we bring any sort of currency other than real world money? There seems to be a lot about gems in various skills, cut and uncut - do they function for a currency of any sort?

Sorry for all the questions, we'll probably have a few more as it comes time for the event. We're all really excited!

Hey! Another group of newcomers! (I am new aswell, and brought 4 others with me)

I actually can answer those for you, conisidering I had alot of the same questions.

1. Weapon Proficiency is not required to weild a weapon. It is simply a prerequisite to some of the more powerful skills. (Such as Florentine and Weapon Mastery) You can use any weapon you want in the game.

2. One game= One weekend = One moon these are the terms used

3. General skills. All of the general skills have effects in game. It just comes down to learning how to use them. (ex:Firemaking and engineering allowing Stark to build a barbaque in game.) Astrology might inform you of a forboding event that will occur. (Or has occured and will again if you took ancient history and legends) Loads of fun stuff can occur.

4. Game money is supplied and used in game. You will run into the coinage soon enough when you get there!

Good luck and see you there!

Notice. Thank you for noticing this notice, your noticing has been noted. (And will be reported to the authorities!)

Hi there!

Since the GM I am sure will get in touch with you shortly, I wanted to answer a few of your questions until such time as he can. I of course defer all my answers back to the gm, but it should give you an idea.

1. A "Game" constitutes a weekend event, like the June event for example would constitute 1 game.

2. General skills are for both role play and in game purposes. For example, you would need to know fire building skills to role play building a fire... which can have in game use such as setting trolls on fire, or a role play use such as your sitting in a field and roleplay lighting a campfire to sit around. Some are purely role play and some have in game mechanical use. The descriptions in the rule book do a pretty good job of explaining each of them.

3. In game currency is only gotten in game. This includes gems and such. The idea is, one... it would be considered cheating and two, its never a good idea to allow external financial resources fund a character in game. Not everyone has money to burn in the real world, so it would create an unfair advantage in the in game enviornment. Hope that makes sense...

As for real world money, don't bring more than you need for gas, food, etc. You won't have any need for it in game and no point risking losing your wallet somewhere out in the woods.

The other questions I am sure the GM can do a far better job at answering than any attempt I would make. So until such time... Hope that helps.

Hello and welcome to Heroic-Realms. It looks as though our players have already answered your questions...I appreciated their help. Thanks for your inquiry about our Live Action Role-playing game. Our goal is to provide the best interactive live action adventure possible. With that said, I like to encourage people NOT to focus on the rules too much for the first few games. After all, this is a time for you as a player to decide whether or not this is the right game for you. I ask that people focus heavily on the plots and/or overall adventure! Come and check us out…Since we are the only Totally Free LARP you really have nothing to lose here. If you don’t like the game you can leave at any time. I will say most people either love it or say it is just not for them at all. Honestly, most people concur and say that it is for them! Hell, where else can you submerge yourself into an environment much like Lord of the Rings, Dungeon & Dragons, or even World of Warcraft???

Anyway, I think I have said enough here for now. If you are interested and want to give yourself an adventure of a lifetime I would ask that you register for the game. If so, please indicate how many people will be participating from your group as we like to partner groups into the same sleeping quarters…this way no one feels uncomfortable etc.

If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thanks for the replies! As soon as we get our characters together (and I know for sure who's coming), we'll be sure to register. See you there! :) (with possibly another question or two before then)

It's true about the not focusing on the rules thing at first. I was recently new. (Not so much any more unless coming up on game five is still new)

The rules, while important, are not the most important part of the game. And if a rule is important to that moment, then someone can and probably will clarify it for you. (i.e. someone will say "Clarify - blah blah blah")

And the rules are very easy to pick up. So it isn't that big a deal. Can't wait to see you at the next game! :D
Music cleanses the understanding; inspires it, and lifts it into a realm which it would not reach if it were left to itself.
